Working remotely from Bali is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is reassuring: if you earn from foreign clients or a foreign employer, doing that work from a laptop in Bali is allowed on the right visa. The key distinction is who pays you and where the activity lands. Remote work for entities outside Indonesia is fine; taking on Indonesian clients or running an on-the-ground business is not. Below we cover the two main visa routes and the grey areas to respect.

The B211A visit visa

The B211A is a flexible visit visa that suits shorter stays and travellers testing the waters. Remote work for foreign clients is permitted on it, as long as the work is not for Indonesian entities and you are not doing on-the-ground commercial activity. It is a practical starting point if you want a few months in Bali while keeping your overseas income flowing.

The Digital Nomad Visa (E33G)

The E33G is the purpose-built remote-work route. It is designed for people earning remote income from outside Indonesia and, depending on the configuration, typically costs somewhere in the range of $150–1,500. If you intend to base yourself in Bali for a longer remote-work stretch, the E33G is usually the cleaner, more secure fit than repeatedly relying on a visit visa.

The grey areas — an honest take

Here is the part people gloss over. Both routes assume your income is foreign and your activity stays remote. Two lines matter: no work for Indonesian entities (you cannot take local clients or be paid by an Indonesian company), and no on-the-ground commercial activity (you cannot run a shop, lead tours, or trade locally). Stay inside those lines and remote work from Bali is straightforward; cross them and you need a Working KITAS instead.

How we help

We are an independent guide — not Imigrasi, not a law firm — so we give you the practical reality rather than a sales pitch. We confirm whether the B211A or E33G fits your stay, separate the government fee from the agent service range in honest USD, and introduce you to a vetted, licensed agent when you are ready. Once your visa is on track, our travel partner can sort the Bali side of things.

What you’ll need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months from arrival
  • Income from foreign clients or a foreign employer
  • Proof of remote work / overseas income for the E33G
  • No Indonesian clients or local commercial activity
  • Accommodation details for your stay
Frequently Asked

Common questions

Short, honest answers. Still unsure? Our concierge replies personally on WhatsApp.

Is it legal to work remotely from Bali?

Yes, if your income is from foreign clients or a foreign employer and the work stays remote. You can do this on a B211A visit visa or the Digital Nomad E33G. Working for Indonesian entities is not allowed.

B211A or the Digital Nomad E33G — which one?

The B211A suits shorter or trial stays; the E33G is purpose-built for longer remote-work stretches. We can match the route to how long you plan to be here.

What counts as crossing the line?

Taking Indonesian clients, being paid by an Indonesian company, or running any on-the-ground business (a shop, tours, local trading). That activity requires a Working KITAS, not a visit or nomad visa.

How much does the Digital Nomad Visa cost?

The E33G typically falls in the $150–1,500 range depending on the configuration, last verified June 2026. We separate the government fee from any agent service charge.
